The Hawaiʻi State Legislature unanimously adopted Senate Concurrent Resolution 95 (SCR 95 SD1) on April 24, 2018  “Supporting the Purchase, Preservation, and Restoration of Agricultural and Conservation Lands in Maunawili Valley, Oʻahu, and Urging Various Federal, State, and County Entities to Acquire and Protect Important Ancient and Historic Sites and Trails and Waters in Maunawili Valley.”

The Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs adopted resolution 2017-30 “Urging Strong Support for the Preservation and Restoration of Maunawili Valley Lands in November 2017.”

A growing network of Windward-based organizations and supporters have endorsed Hui Maunawili-Kawainui’s initiative, assisted by The Trust for Public Land, to acquire these lands for the long-term benefit of the people of Hawaiʻi. Windward legislators from Waimānalo to the North Shore have unanimously supported TPL’s efforts to acquire HRT/Weinberg’s lands.

The Kailua Neighborhood Board (KNB) supports Senate Concurrent Resolution 95 urging public acquisition of HRT’s Maunawili lands (KNB Minutes, April 5, 2018) and opposes agricultural subdivisions in Maunawili. (KNB Minutes, June 1, 2017, Motions 2,3, and 4 adopted by unanimous consent.)

The Department of Land and Natural Resources also supports acquisition of HRT/Weinberg’s lands for the common good and will work with TPL, other government agencies and community groups to protect and maintain natural and cultural resources including managed access to historic trails and cultural sites.

The Department of Agriculture is poised to partner with community groups and farmers engaged in sustainable environmental and agricultural activities to pursue a new model of cooperation to assure actual farming of these lands.
